Inspired by the joke that a BS degree actually stands for "bullshit," MS for "more shit" and PhD for "piled higher and deeper," it's
PhD the comic. Beautifully drawn and intelligently penned by former mechanical engineering grad student Jorge Cham, PhD explores themes of geekiness, academic frustration, student poverty, procrastination, and metaphysical doubt. It follows the exploits of Cecilia a geeky woman in the geeky man's world of hard science; Slackenany, who has been a lazybones grad student for a ledgendary and unknown amount of time; the unnamed hero, whos adviser has not remembered his name for the ten years of the comic's existence, and Tajel, the token humanities student. Beneath the cheeky jokes and movie parodies, there is a genuine and bitter criticism of the academic process. I tried to hold off reading this until I was an actual grad student, but I couldn't stop myself from reading the entire archive.
